BUFFALO AREA PROFILE
Buffalo is the heart of western New York. Also known as “The Queen City”, Buffalo is a gateway to one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Besides being the birthplace of the Buffalo wing, Buffalo’s reputation as a center for the arts continues to grow with more than 22 professional theater companies in the area, including Shea’s Performing Arts center located in the historic downtown area. Buffalo’s Delaware Park is home to the second largest outdoor Shakespeare festival in the country. You can also find the acoustic and architectural perfection of the internationally-acclaimed Kleinhans Music Hall in Buffalo.
As well as the flourishing of the arts, Buffalo is an up and coming center for bioinformatics and human genome research. The researchers at University of Buffalo and Roswell Park Cancer Institute have sparked this growth with the formation of the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
The greater Buffalo area is known to withstand economic downfalls. According to a 2010 study conducted by the Brookings Institute, Buffalo ranks at number 18 among the 100 largest Metropolitan Areas. Despite the high unemployment that auto-industry communities are facing around the country, Buffalo maintains an unemployment rate lower than the nation as a whole despite its high concentration of auto related industries.
Buffalo has a low cost of living, an abundance of home ownership, a short average commute time, a low crime rate and the most affordable housing market in the U.S. Coupled with the plethora of activities that “The City of Good Neighbors” offers, Forbes places the region in the top ten places to raise a family.
Significant Companies
Much of Buffalo’s strength comes from the healthcare, banking and automotive industries.
